FBI opens investigation into incident involving pro-Trump cars attempting to run Biden campaign bus off road

Sunday, November 1, 2020

A spokesperson for the FBI told CNN Sunday that the department is now involved in a recorded traffic incident where former US Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign officials claim a pro-Trump “caravan” harassed passengers on a Biden campaign bus in Texas, and ultimately attempted to run the bus off of a Texas road. Biden campaign officials accused the drivers of the vehicles of surrounding the bus, and attempting to bring the bus to a stop in the middle of the highway. The Biden campaign cancelled at least one event in Texas following the incident as a precaution to reduce the risk of unrest.

A video posted to Twitter shows an incident consistent with the Biden campaign’s claims, showing the driver of a truck sporting Blue Lives Matter and Trump 2020 flags intentionally ramming the bus from behind. Biden campaign staffers reportedly called 911 and requested an escort to their next stop by police.

“Rather than engage in productive conversation about the drastically different visions that Joe Biden and Donald Trump have for our country, Trump supporters in Texas today instead decided to put our staff, surrogates, supporters, and others in harm’s way” commented Tariq Thowfeek, communications director for the Biden campaign.

President Donald Trump lashed out at the FBI’s involvement in the situation and defended those accused of harassing the passengers on the bus, tweeting “In my opinion, these patriots did nothing wrong. Instead, the FBI & Justice should be investigating the terrorists, anarchists, and agitators of ANTIFA, who run around burning down our Democrat run cities and hurting our people!” This tweet came after videos had already surfaced showing the caravan boxing in the campaign bus on Interstate 35 en route to Austin, Texas from San Antonio. He later told a rally in Michigan that the caravan “was protecting [Biden’s] bus yesterday — because they are nice. They had hundreds of cars.”

The commander-in-chief had previously expressed support for the caravan, retweeting a video of the vehicles surrounding the Biden campaign bus, with the caption “I LOVE TEXAS!”

Neither Joe Biden or his running mate, senator Kamala Harris were on the bus during time of the incident, though Harris had been campaigning elsewhere in Texas. News of the incident comes two days before the 2020 US Presidential Election as the race tightens in Texas, a state in which Trump won in 2016.
